Photographer:

Pronunciation: \fə-ˈtä-grə-fər\

Date: 1847

Definition of a photographer: They capture some of your most precious moments. They paint a picture or tell a story through images. A photographer records memories, events, time and people through a camera. Photographers capture life as it happens.

What is stated above is all true but the one characteristic that is required to be an excellent photographer is PATIENCE. Whether you have a nervous bride, a terrified child, parents who feel the need to impose, patience is key. Sometimes life happens too fast and sometimes you just have to wait for that right moment. But when the stage is set and everyone is calm and that shutter goes off you know that you’ve captured that perfect moment.

Kimberly Ponsky:

Pronunciation: KIM-bur-lee Pon-skee

Date: 2010 (no she’s not a baby) but this is who she is now

Yup. I’m defining my boss. (biting my lip) She of course possesses many other positive traits but when it comes to photography she has more patience then anyone I know. Kids come in here crying and screaming and yet she approaches each and every child and shoot with a warm smile. She is ready to take on the challenge. And more often then not, parents almost always apologize for their child who seemed to be uncooperative during the shoot and are a bit unsure whether even one good photo was captured. Yet Kim, always responds with confidence letting them know that there will be many great photos to choose from. She’s right. She knows. She’s patient.

So don’t worry. Be happy. Sometimes even the tears are cute…they capture the moment. Kim captures the moment and the moments, even the crying ones, are what tell the story.

As the world of photography expands further into the digital world, the role of a photographer is moving right along with it. No longer are we glued to a tripod, under a velvet hood with hour-long exposures. We can now capture images practically in the dark with just the snap of a shutter. And, as photographic technology takes it a step further, we photographers are now entering a new and exciting world… VIDEO! My new camera, the Nikon D3s not only surpasses my previous D3 in its image capture abilities, but now adds HD video to its list of attributes. I’m so excited to now be able to offer clients– kids, families, weddings and bar mitzvahs, alike– a more complete photographic experience. Adding film, captured with a look and feel consistent with the still images really adds somthing special.

Now tasked with learning how to incorporate this new feature… the fusion of images, moving and still, I turned to my go-to guy… my 6-month old nephew “Baby J” to be my guinea pig… What do you think??

Sometime’s it’s hard keeping a 19 month-old entertained or distracted long enough to remain under the lights of the studio for longer than a split second… they have places they need to be, after all! After a solid half hour of pictures, Little R decided running laps in and out of the studio was her new plan… with her Mom chasing her, of course (little kid photo shoots are also a great calorie burner!!)– So, we decided to repurpose the acrylic floor that’s typically used to provide a great reflection to the studio photos… With a dry-erase marker in hand (and at times, in mouth!), Little R had a blast creating her masterpiece as her Mom got a rest, and I got plenty of adorable pictures!

Okay, so I know my recent posts have been my nieces and nephew, but come on… look at them! Can you blame me?? My brother loved Paddington Bear when he was little… in fact, it was his nickname. My mom found his old tattered up bear this weekend, and decided to try Paddington’s clothes on his 6 month old son– a perfect fit! Now my brother has his very own live toy!! When I caught wind of this act, my thoughts instantly went into the studio where we could surround the baby with stuffed animals, and turn him into just “one of the guys.” He’s not quite sitting up yet, so some tricky positioning had to be used to prop him up, but the results turned out pretty darn cute!! I really have the best job… I honestly feel bad for anyone who doesn’t get to dress babies up, and photograph them in big piles of bears!

My brother and sister-in-law innocently left me home with their 10-day old newborn baby boy… Surprise surprise, I took it upon myself to turn their back yard construction site into our very own natural light studio backdrop! The warm summer day provided a comfortable environment for my adorable little nephew, and aside from his displeasure in being repositioned every two minutes, he was a great model! While I love the studio’s fine-art approach to newborn photos, the outdoor & natural light environment provides a fun alternative– and an endless supply of props!

My brother’s response when I showed him the pictures?? ”No you didn’t… I never would have let you do that.” He loved them! They’re coming in the studio tonight for their “official” newborn portrait session.

Here are some of my favorite shots!
