When people call us to schedule their baby’s newborn photos, we tell them to schedule it within the baby’s first two weeks. Ideally, the first week. While that may be a bit overwhelming for the new moms and dads, it makes for a much smoother session for everyone. Noah’s mom took our advice and brought her brand new baby into the studio at just 7 days old. This squishy boy was the perfect gentleman… sleepy as could be, and easy going throughout the whole session. We had so much fun, and it was such a relaxed session because he was too tired to fuss. New babies need their sleep, and they are much more cooperative for the various poses and ideas we try out. We put Noah in all sorts of fun hats, and even dressed him up as various wild animals to match his jungle themed nursery… Check out this handsome fella’s first photo shoot!
I am thrilled to say that I have a new little photo guinea-piglet, in the form of my 9-day old niece. This little one will have plenty of picture time with Aunt Kim, because she sure is cute! She hasn’t made it into the studio yet for her “official” newborn photo session, but we did have an informal natural light session at home. No lights other than the soft window light (thanks to my wonderful camera, I can get fantastic results even in low-light situations!), a cozy blanket over a dog bed (yes, I’ll admit it), and the warmth of a space heater to keep that little 7.5lb body warm and happy. I’m honestly not sure which I prefer– studio photography or natural light photography for newborns… each has such merit. In the studio you can craft and create such works of fine art. The light is controlled, and with the simplicity of the backdrops, the images are so striking! Natural light has a softness about it that pairs so nicely with a delicate new baby. The gentleness of the images, the personal touch of being at home, and the variety of locations & props also produce fantastic results. So which should a new Mom & Dad choose for their new baby? It really depends on the style you prefer– Take a look at these at-home photos, and then stay tuned next week when I get this little one in the studio for her studio shoot… make a comment– let me know which style of newborn photography you prefer!
August was a great month– filled with weddings, lots of pregnancy and newborn sessions, and tons of family photos, both in the studio and outdoors with natural light! Here is a slideshow featuring a little bit of every photo session from August 2009. Can’t wait to see what September brings…!
My brother and sister-in-law innocently left me home with their 10-day old newborn baby boy… Surprise surprise, I took it upon myself to turn their back yard construction site into our very own natural light studio backdrop! The warm summer day provided a comfortable environment for my adorable little nephew, and aside from his displeasure in being repositioned every two minutes, he was a great model! While I love the studio’s fine-art approach to newborn photos, the outdoor & natural light environment provides a fun alternative– and an endless supply of props!
My brother’s response when I showed him the pictures?? “No you didn’t… I never would have let you do that.” He loved them! They’re coming in the studio tonight for their “official” newborn portrait session.
Here are some of my favorite shots!
This new family came into the studio to view their proofs today, and we had so much fun looking at the photos from their newborn photo session! I have never seen a dad so madly in love with his little girl– I couldn’t stop smiling :-) What a lucky little lady… I can’t wait to watch her grow up!
