Daryl & Kerry’s Downtown Cleveland Wedding

Our first wedding of 2012 was a great one thanks to Daryl and Kerry and their wedding at Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center.  While it was windy, it was an amazing day — blue skies, warm-ish temperatures (for Cleveland in January), and that ever elusive sunshine.  Everything for the day came together seamlessly, thanks in large part to the help of Heidi Baumgart of Heidzillas.  But the beauty of the day should be attributed mostly to Daryl and Kerry — their relaxed demeanor, combined with their enthusiasm gave us great material to work with, and we all had a great time together.  The couple really enjoyed themselves throughout the entire day, and it showed!  It was so great to spend the day with them, to experience their relationship, their love for each other, and their excitement at starting this next chapter in their lives.  These two compliment each other so well, and I loved seeing how thrilled they were to finally marry each other and how happy everyone was to be there celebrating.

White Weddings and Winter Wonderlands

When the snow came pouring down this past Saturday, many Clevelanders sneered, while others curled up in front of a fire… there was one person, however, who got her winter wedding wish.  Alissa and Michael were being married not only on the anniversary of the day they met… but on the anniversary of the day they got engaged.  While that December date provided a meaningful day for their wedding, Alissa had a vision of a beautiful, snowy winter day.  Well, Mother Nature sure did deliver!

The couple kept each other warm and were such great sports braving the elements!    It was a wonderful day, filled with fun, love, Christmas Ale, and yes… plenty of snow!

Venice Workshop Preview

Over the past few weeks, I have been completely immersed in all things photography. Whether sitting in a workshop with some of the world’s best photographers, or walking the picture-perfect streets of Greece and Italy… Photography has been on my mind.
While in Greece I had the opportunity to learn 7 different perspectives from the different Masters teaching the workshop. Posing to candid-capture, flash to ambient light… my brain is spinning from all the concepts we covered.
Now, in Venice, I am attending a smaller workshop with just one of those photographers… Yervant. He and his amazing wife, Anie, have created a new world of wedding photography — and many have followed in his footsteps. Here I have the opportunity to learn his techniques for shooting, and have him critique my work personally. What an AMAZING experience! Yervant was named one of the most influential photographers of our time… and now I am being mentored by him. Wow!
If I thought my head was spinning before… now it may fall off completely! It’s been an amazing 3 weeks, and I can’t wait to get home and put all of my new ideas into action. Lookout, because I’m returning fully charged, fully energized, and full of new and exciting ideas!!
Here are a few shots I took yesterday that I’m submitting for today’s critique… Wish me luck!

Brooke & Brandon’s Canterbury Tale

“Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote  / The droghte of March hath perced to the roote, / And bathed every veyne in swich licour / Of which vertu engendred is the flour; / Whan Zephirus eek with his sweete breeth / Inspired hath in every holt and heeth / The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne / Hath in the Ram his halve cours yronne, / And smale fowles maken melodye, / That slepen al the nyght with open ye / (So priketh hem nature in hir corages), / Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages.”

When Geoffrey Chaucer wrote these lines as the Prologue to his Canterbury Tales, he described spring’s renewal and rebirth.  When I had to memorize this passage in 11th grade, I never expected to reference it again… This past weekend, Brooke and Brandon created their own tale at Canterbury Country Club in Beachwood, Ohio; only this version is not about nature’s renewal, but the start of their new life together.

I watched from afar as the bride grew up friends with my cousin, and was thrilled to be a part of the day.  Capturing the romance of the wedding was not hard, as it flowed from every aspect of the wedding — Brooke’s dress, the candlelight, and most of all the interactions of the bride and groom.

While Chaucer’s story has lasted throughout the ages… Brooke and Brandon’s has only just begun.  Here’s a glimpse of their wedding day…

Ashley and Jon’s Akron Wedding

You know when you have those days when all the stars seem to align, and when everything goes the way you’d hoped it would?  Well, we had one of those days this past Saturday when photographing Ashley & Jon’s wedding.  The fun began when we met with the couple’s pre-screener — Maid of Honor, Brittany.  A photographer herself, she was given the task of sifting through the options and choosing the photographers she thought would best suit her friends.  Once we made it through with her approval, we met the bride, Ashley.  Beautiful and charming, we instantly clicked– and when she told me that she wanted to do some photos that were “risque” and “out of the ordinary,” I’m pretty sure I fell in love with her!  Then, a few days before the wedding, when I had the chance to meet with her again, this time with Jon, that love was confirmed– and spread to her oh-so-cute soldier :-)

Then came the wedding day.  We met at their hotel, right in between Akron and Canton.  About 10 minutes after her dress was on, Ashley willingly laid down on the sidewalk in front of the hotel, legs in the air, and happily mooned 77-South.  We left the bridal party and families behind, and disappeared with just the bride and groom to the Akron Art Museum before reuniting with everyone back at the Ohio Prestwick Country Club.  The day was filled with fun, laughter, and two willing models who really wanted the best from their wedding photos.

It was so much fun, and so satisfying to be able to try every pose, and create everything we thought of.  At one point during dinner, my husband and I were discussing a fun idea we wanted to try involving putting Ashley on the bar.  After nixing the idea and deciding it wouldn’t fly with the couple because they wouldn’t want to pose in front of all their guests at the reception, we were approached by Ashley with a request to take a photo on top of the bar!!  Are you kidding me?  She was a dream bride– beautiful, fun, funny, and willing to do whatever it took for great photos… and here are some of the shots we got.
